  A rare, unscripted, unsupervised glimpse of life in China in an era where her citizens grappled with questions of purpose and meaning. Wu captures these sentiments in the microcosm of the film’s subjects.

  It reminded me of an exhibit last year at the Hirshhorn Museum in DC which displayed many wonderful pieces from this era of Beijing, before the 1989 crackdowns on free expression which by the mid- or late-90’s gradually curtailed the “scene” and eventually destroyed that particular artist…

  Too much exposition and the birthday cake was clearly dry as fuck, obviously kept in a fridge uncovered for 6 hours while they were filming other scenes. Neither of them could even pretend to like it.

  There was really no story. It tried to be a movie about Napoleon’s battles AND his relationship with Josephine but failed at both. Scenes are obviously and horrifically cut for time, and Joaquin Phoenix was a total miscast. He delivered his lines at Austerlitz as though it was his first time saying those words, even though he is supposed to be this revered general.
