Frailty 2001
Frailty has a fascinating story, but from a 2024 viewers perspective, the movie suffers most from its silly typewriter font and tired-feeling neo-noir style. Maybe the font wasn’t so cliché in 2001 and maybe the overly dramatic shooting will feel fresh in a few decades, but it was giving late 80s procedural drama with zero irony. The hands-on-person-to-reveal-evil was also unintentionally goofy - painful, since the rest of the movie has so much potential.

Mandy 2018
Mandy is a hypnotizing plunge into the edges of human belief and experience which adds up to an abstract, surrealist, part-revenge-film part-odyssey. With its slow pace and a feeling of almost enough information to put the pieces together, I wouldn’t say this movie is for everyone, but it is beautiful in its execution for those whose alley it resides. Great acting performances and I’m always into cult stuff.

I was not prepared to like this movie. Get through some of the cringier opening scenes and you’ll find interesting relationship dynamics and highly disturbing situations. I was wondering how they would make a movie out of this premise and they did it pretty well. If only those cables didn’t look so smooth it might be a 4 1/2 starrer…
