Mixed feelings about this, wanted to love it, and I did fall for the characters and there’s a lot of good, but felt a bit incomplete to me
There was a lot of chat from creatives about how this isn’t a film about the queer experience, but is a film about people who happen to be queer - lovely sentiment but I’m not sure how well I thought that was actually expressed
Also felt much longer than it’s run time
Them singing at each other through a vulva shaped slit in a prison wall…
Bits that felt too close to home, as someone who works in the theatre industry:
- Debates over whether to cancel the show and close the theatre
- Anxious female character has to write everything down in a notebook
- As above, but she’s a victim of workplace misogyny
- Men getting territorial over tiny creative choices
- ‘I’m afraid a producer is expected to indulge the whims of the talent, especially when they’re American’
Good film tho
Went into this not prepared for it to be quite so funny which just made the grave scene onwards hit even harder
Silly that Marianne Jean-Baptiste hasn’t been nominated for absolutely everything ??
