Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honneamise

    ★★★★★

A sci fi film that is actually, legitimately fresh for a change. Worldbuilding and animation that is on level with, if not better than, Ghibli's best work is paired with a story about space travel that does not get caught up in lazy glorification of colonization and expansion. Instead, Wings of Honneamise reflects on humanity's history and asks how technological progress comes about, and whether the reasons are just. The only science fiction film that I feel is sincerely comparable in it's themes and methods is 2001, which is just about the highest compliment you can give a sci-fi film, so that should speak for itself.

Simultaneously a tribute to, and a takedown of Godard, this film is a great coming of age tale. Hanna is one of the best "rebellious teenager" characters I've ever seen, embodying the desire to grow up while still afraid of the world. It's a great companion piece to one of my other favorite films, Lilja 4Ever. This film is a hell of a lot more optimistic, but Hanna's descent hits just as hard as Lilja's because she's consistently portrayed as what a child is; innocent, but impressionable.

Reminds me a LOT of the type of stuff DEVO was doing around the same time. Ridiculously obvious and absurd, Mr. Freedom still manages to be a pretty well-done critique of American politics.
