One of my favourite elements of Sunset Boulevard are the performances, and one thing a Billy Wilder film is going to have is a good performance. The ensemble of characters from Joe, to Max, Betty, even DeMille, all have an element of the ‘still’ about them. They are doom stricken to an extent, aware of the world and its dangers. They are cool. They are sane, maybe too sane. This only heightens the glorious Gloria Swanson’s animated and vibrant performance, a true silent star emoting — her ‘celluloid self.’ The other actors playing in contrast allows her unique star to shine even brighter.

There's always a girl in the picture. Haven't you ever been to the movies?

I was hooked from the moment it began. Self aware, entertaining and meaningful…I wish it were longer: the montages, although wonderful, made the film fly by. Also, what an incredible script! One of the intentions for this film is to evoke happiness; the fact that I finished this grinning from ear-to-ear is a testament to Sullivan’s final lines, “There's a lot to be said for making people laugh. Did you know that that's all some people have? It isn't much, but it's better than nothing in this cockeyed caravan”.

    Where are my Herrmann-heads at?
When Scéne D’amour faded into the score I started levitating. The ultimate metamorphosis song. Phenomenal choice.

We were unable to see the original film we planned to watch in the cinema today, so this had to do. Pure slop. I need to watch Singin’ in the Rain or something after that to cleanse me.

Judy Garland was representing all of us when she fainted after Gene Kelly kissed her hand.

it’s the subtle moments between gene and judy that are the most meaningful. the little glances in each other’s direction, the tender kisses on the cheek, the innocent smiles. it’s all so beautiful. their chemistry is unmatched. even in scenes where they aren’t the main focus, there they are, off to the side, charming as ever.
    happy centennial judy garland!
