  A real shock to the system if like me you've only seen the glacially-paced minimalist films that Chantal Akerman is more famous for. This is a completely bonkers, maximalist, instantly-dated, colourful fever dream and I loved every second of it.

  There isn't a single second of a football match shown in The Pass, but there is a pain running through it that is completely tied to the game. One without a single out Premier League player, and one that treated its gay footballers, like Justin Fashanu, appallingly.

  I had no idea who Robert Lloyd or the Nightingales were before watching this (nor that there used to be a giant King Kong statue in Birmingham) and yet I had way more fun than any Friday night BBC4 hagiography of a band I know and love. Stewart Lee’s in his element here as superfan narrator and Lloyd is great company throughout. The gentle piss-taking tone ensures that the more gimmicky touches work too, like how Lee interweaves the story…
