This movie was not good. Very peculiar decision to cast the actual guys themselves. That explains the super wooden acting. It’s an amazing story and one that deserves a better treatment than it got here.

    ★★

The cinematography is superb, but there didn’t feel like there was much unifying the film. Here’s some steep mountains, here’s some people ice climbing, here’s some Tibetan prayer wheels, here’s some stock footage with an odd assortment of mostly classical and baroque music backing everything. Snowboarding set to classical violin is kind of cringeworthy. The Arvo Pärt pieces work because they arise from a mystical place and mountains are nothing if not mysterious. It’s only 70 some odd minutes and I found myself staring at the clock for the last 20.

Saw the film under the peculiar circumstance of watching it while Mogwai played the score live at a pretty extreme volume. Was a powerful set of images though.

Great documentary about former MLB pitcher Doc Ellis, whose mostly known for throwing a no hitter while on LSD. That’s kind of the hook for this film, but Ellis was much more than that. He was an outspoken civil rights advocate in an era when pro athletes were expected to “stick to sports” and black athletes especially were expected to keep a low profile. The letter Jackie Robinson wrote him was beautiful and got me a little misty.

    Despite that…
