    Six She's and a He

This film is really great fun. Totally in the vein of early HG Lewis with that bright red paint blood. I’m surprised by how grizzly some of the gore scenes actually are, even though the general vibe is more like a Doris Wishman nudie cutie or something. There is one particular decapitation scene that is quite memorable. Also a fun bludgeoning by wet sponge. There are more fun scenes, but those are my favorites. The AGFA release presents the film in greater condition than the film probably deserves, but that’s why AGFA’s the best!

    Après le feu

I thought this was really interesting. On the screen we see railway tracks that start out "normal", but are gradually distorted more and more. It's almost like the footage is soaked in compression artifacts, like the contrast or sharpness levels are mashed to the moon or something. I don't know to what end, but there is a very unique effect there. The gradual destruction of the image is very dizzying, with the railroad tracks remaining the only un-affected parts. I also like the sound design that becomes more spacious and reverb-y together with the imagery. I will keep an eye out for this artist!

I think context can provide deeper appreciation for many of Brakhage's films and Chinese Series is one of them. As the title indicates, this was, I believe, supposed to be the first in a series of films inspired by Chinese writing, but unfortunately Brakhage died before he could finish it. What he managed to produce was this little 2 min 18 sec-long short. And well, in and of itself it most certainly isn't useless. With the title in mind, the…

    The Beast That Killed Women

One of the great things about films like this is that in all their technical ineptitude there will occasionally be glimpses of pure (mostly accidental) cinematic beauty.

There is a sequence here where the police come to the nudist camp to pick up the first (and only) victim of the titular monster. As they walk past the swimming pool and the ball game court it’s just dead silence all around. All the nudists are just standing there, watching in shock…
