    Nosferatu

    ★★★½

I’ve always been swayed and thrilled by Robert Eggers’ work, and a reimagining of Nosferatu at his helm is a great addition to his growing filmography.

Nosferatu feels like a wistful love letter to european painters of old and folk horror history from both film and literature, crammed in a peculiar form of sensory-pleasing vision. It was meticulously and earnestly constructed, the sheer amount of precision and details was dazzling to watch -- I am especially a big fan of…

  • The Substance

    The Substance

    ★★★

By transforming phenomena into symbols with bodily metamorphism and a dash of hyperbole, Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance delves into Hollywood’s most uncomfortable reality: ageism. Being experimentally gross, thought-provocative and shockingly-disgusting, the bulk of the film was expertly handled with its intricate mystery, clever idea, and escalating tension. It’s certainly unfortunate that the last section went completely off track, becoming nothing but implausible, deplorable, and overly graphic. It was almost as though the writers were at a loss for ideas and had to settle for a chaotic spectacle.

    A Different Man

What an exceptional intricate tale about the human psyche in which Sebastian Stan delivers his best work to date, beautifully illustrating the sharp contrast between one who’s constantly mired in self-doubt, moulding self-loathing, and all-consuming bitterness, and another who uses all bits of negativity as fuel for his own growth. Among the most captivating tales of hatred of oneself, crippling beauty standards, along with what it’s like to lose oneself is told in Aaron Schimberg’s second feature film owing to its brilliant prosthetic makeup, retro-cinema palette, and solid narrative. Surely one of my favorites from 2024.

    Uzumaki

    ★★½

To begin this review, let me state that I’m an avid reader and a die-hard fan of horror manga, particularly the amazing work of the remarkable horror manga master Junji Ito. I've read almost everything for him and have been an admirer for as long as I can remember. Uzumaki is one of the first manga that really drew me into Ito’s world; I even bought the 3-in-1 deluxe version because I was so enamoured with the body and cosmic…

    Past Lives

    ★★★½

Entrancingly defying the laws of closure in such a tangled way, Past Lives feels like an agonizing, wistful glance at the way life unfurls, but also notable dance and divine acceptance of love that is within and without. While I believe the story build-up could’ve been way better, I still consider it a good debut by Celine Song overall.

One thing I absolutely like about Nolan is how he fantastically manages to build intensity like no other. No matter how late you are to the experience, don’t miss it. You don’t always see Nolan exceeding expectations and his own craft, specially through a biopic film.

Where do I even begin? This was one of my most anticipated films of 2023 and I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. I’m absolutely blown away by how hermetic the editing and pacing of…
