  The film opens with a man hanging from a rope, his body trembling, while the lines "Oonjaale Paadaamo..." from the song "Thumbiva" play in the background. This prologue pretty much sets the mood of the film.

  As the story progresses, the investigation gradually stops feeling like the film’s central concern, instead leaning into the absurdity and occasional goofiness of the situation. However, the shifts in focus between suspects keep the narrative engaging to an extent.

  Pani leans heavily on the late '90s to mid-2000s Malayalam mass masala template, with one-dimensional characters, the use of sexual assault against women as a mere catalyst for male-driven revenge, and gory violence as vigilante justice, seemingly just to shock the audience. Add to that a Thrissur tour (which sometimes feels like a promo for the newly constructed Sakthan Skywalk that rarely anyone uses), and you’re left with a formulaic experience that feels outdated and tedious.
