Rewatching this for the first time and Barbie has some strong transfeminine coding. The moment in the real world where she cries for the first time and she likes it and then just takes in the full breadth of human emotion really hit home.
That being said all the Mattel moments were awful and a lot of the feminist commentary felt shallow. It’s a good movie (particularly the sets and costuming, plus the two leads’ acting), but clearly hamstrung by its need to serve the brand.
