I still think about this movie weeks later. It's objectively pretty bad. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett delivers some decent monologues and the cinematography is good for this budget/genre, although it often felt like a talent showcase due to the constant stylistic changes. This felt like an homage to Matthew Johnson's The Dirties (2013) with a higher budget and worse script.

The Substance 2024
This was a courageous performance by Demi Moore on an important theme with a lot of potential, but left a lot to be desired. Fargeat really didn't trust the audience and resorts to repeatedly having gratuitous scenes to drive home a point with which the audience is already acquainted. This could have been the Gen Z's Pulp Fiction (1994) but will instead be their Independence Day (1996): a fun story but by no means a classic.
Imagine if I added another analogy and finished this review by pointing out that reading this repetitive review was a similar experience to viewing The Substance.
