  Is Ikiru the best movies I’ve ever seen?! Maybe. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but I’d recently watched Tokyo Story and thought it was a little slow and was disappointed with the sound and picture quality. I loved everything about Ikiru. The structure of the storytelling in last third of the film was especially interesting and unexpected. I definitely got It’s a Wonderful Life vibes, but sort of in reverse. Like, instead of realizing you’ve been living a good life all along, you understand that you have to work each day to ensure you’re living a meaningful life. So good.

  I’ve never seen a filmmaker fumble his advantage so badly. I’m a supporter of ambitious passion projects (e.g., Beau Is Afraid, Bardo, etc), but this was something else entirely. In the worst way possible. In fact, I haven’t been this baffled (and enraged) since reading Atlas Shrugged, and the comparison doesn’t stop there. Has a movie about power ever had so little to say?
