Magnolia 1999
Like much of his filmography, PTA puts scene construction and acting first and foremost. Unfortunately, he needs screenwriters that can construct a narrative story.
Magnolia falls short of Anderson’s true gems; There Will be Blood and Boogie Nights, landing amongst Licorice Pizza and Inherent Vice.

Ridley Scott is taking historic events that I have always dreamed of seeing on the big screen, like the battle of Austerlitz and the flooding of the Colosseum, and covering them in literal shit.
I can only hope studio execs don’t attribute a lukewarm reception to Scott’s historical epics as a lack of interest in the time periods depicted. The man must be stopped.
