William H. Macy's character made me feel sick to my stomach, even worse than Peter Stormare's character. I was highly tempted to turn it off due to just how unpleasant these characters were. Thank goodness for Marge Gunderson, the beating heart of this grimy story, who reminds us of the good in the world.
Seems like Huston was hitting plot beats instead of letting the characters drive the story.
The novel is about a tortured character, wedged between a Christian upbringing and a nihilistic worldview following the Second World War and personal traumas. It is also very comedic in O'Connor's wry way.
The film didn't seem to get that across or there was a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material.
Thinking about this movie again and getting seriously irritated.
