  Less of a movie and more of a Mario greatest hits compilation. Illumination just threw everything from the games they could in while still maintaining a semblance of a plot. It won’t work if you’ve never touched a Mario game in your life, but I was a Nintendo kid so I was into it. The arrangements of the Koji Kondo themes made me tear up! The licensed needle drops are abysmal, single-handedly making a movie that otherwise exudes passion feel like a cheap cashgrab. Pratt is actually pretty good! Fun but would have been something special with a little more heart.
