Deliverance 1972
Rewatched with commentary by director & producer John Boorman. Absolutely fascinating. It sounds like making this film was an adventure. I love Boorman’s admiration of Bill McKinney’s performance as the mountain man.

When I studied calligraphy and traditional theatre in Japan, I learned many aesthetics, among them "ma", the kanji of which looks somewhat akin to a window: 間. A candlelight vigil of warming, comforting glows. A half-dream in a bedroom with the shadows of rain shrouding the walls, floor to ceiling, as if the whole room is weeping. An unspeakable rush through rain-soaked nighttime traffic and gusts of snow, the countless lights of cars and signals both disorienting and somehow hopeful in an urgent act of heroism.
Moments such as these are why I love cinema.
