The Thing 1982
One of the best horror films I have ever seen. The sense of paranoia throughout and the constant insecurity that never leaves the screen makes up for the wooden characters. Aside from the pitiful gunshot sounds, the technicals are fantastic: great music, brilliantly chilling stunning practical effects and probably some of the best production design ever in a horror movie. Acting is fine on all fronts, but Kurt Russell is grounded in his role and was probably the reason why my disbelief stayed so suspended. No jumpscares needed, THIS is how you scare people.
Honestly tops The Shining imo.

Amélie 2001
Alphabet Club Week 1 - A
With Amélie, Jeunet creates a intricate world bursting at the seams with colour and passion. The sound design and visuals are energetic and often quirky, but never take away from the enthralling aura of the film. The characters are fleshed out, all with their differences, their pros and cons, drawing you in further. The soundtrack is gorgeous, providing a comfortable atmosphere that settles the tone whenever there is a risk of the film going…
