First off, I think this doc works better if you see it as an analysis of the different ways an appearance-focused society necessitates unethical and immoral acts, rather than as a simple explanation of the “aunt Becky” college scandal we all heard about two years ago.
We see the rise of a callous criminal mastermind. We see him exploit people’s deepest insecurity: not comparing to their wealthy neighbors. We don’t see why he did it, but we do see why everyone went along.
Prestige is a lie. It’s distracting and misleading. Prestige is not success. Prestige is “deceit.” That’s the oil that made the machine turn so well for so long.
(I hope I am not a hypocrite.)
What they all did was fucked up.
