Platoon is one of the best Vietnam war movies, and also one of the best war movies in general. Oliver Stone uses his own experiences to put us right in the fox hole with him. The best of this comes out in the individual stories each member of the Platoon has. Stone showcases not just the awfulness of this war, but the effects it had on the men who fought. One of my favorite movies of all time, still remember watching for the first time when it came out in '98. An excellent film for anyone wanting to learn about the experiences of American soldiers during WWII--especially the D-Day invasion.
Personally, this movie is one of the biggest reasons why I became a history teacher. Still after all these years I can remember my HS History teacher pushing in a tv and showing the film on laser disc of all things.
A powerhouse of a film made all that more impactful through the direction of Spike Lee and the acting of Denzel Washington. Malcolm X comes alive on the screen in all his glory and controversy. The Civil Rights teacher in me appreciates just how well this film shows not just the words and actions of Malcolm, but the culture that was built from his elevated place in society combined with the impact of those words and actions.
