Really rings true. Lady Bird (the character) is flawed (she can be a bit of a brat and underachieves in school) but she’s also bright ambitious and earnest. Laurie Metcalf is sublime as the mom who loves her daughter but can’t always figure out how to connect. Tracy Letts also fabulous as the glue keeping the family together. I hope Greta Gerwig delivers on her promise of more Sacramento stories.

This is a movie that I won't stop thinking about for a long time, but the basic fact is that it's entertaining as hell--Lil Rel Howery's performance is supremely funny and Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener are perfectly cast as white liberal parents meeting their daughter's African-American boyfriend. Director Jordan Peele delivers a satisfying suspense thriller that's worthy of Hitchcock, while raising unsettling issues.

Opening Night, Philadelphia Film Festival. Stunning performances from Margo Robbie as the title character and Allison Janney as her casually-cruel mother highlight this film. The movie's tone shifts wildly and suddenly several times in a way that can be quite disconcerting. Its a quite funny and quite shocking retelling of a tabloid tale that many of us only thought we knew.
