One of the best sci-fi films in the first quarter of this century. A great adaptation of an even greater original. A visual feast with genuine heart and clear affection for the source. The casting controversy, stoked by clickbaity media outlets, is a hollow argument—casting Major as a white female serves the film's themes. Those themes, central to the cyberpunk genre, are central to the movie's plot and aesthetics; self-identity, the blending of machine and humanity, and corporate malfeasance populate the world and drive the narrative. Criminally underrated.
