Alps 2011
Lanthimos is the rare arthouse director who benefited from Hollywood investment. His early films could all do with being tighter and embracing their central conceits better. Sure, lanthimos is offbeat but Alps is just weird for the sake of weird. There's one three minute scene where a character is reading what seems like a wikipedia entry on window fittings.

Stephen Soderbergh is joining my list of directors whose films I need to stop going to see (alongside M Night Shyamalan and Jordan Peele, who also keep squandering brilliant concepts). Granted, this and presence are (somehow) my first impressions of his work, but they both feel half-assed, tonally jarring and really strangely acted and directed. They both just feel so off. A thriller about a husband and wife who are both spies, spying on one another and manipulating each other…

Moving at a fast paced, breakneck speed even speed, full of adrenaline and creativity, bolstered by a hilarious first act and dynamic second act, despite a final act which becomes more CGI action blockbuster than any other, with every format cliche imaginable present. Strong performances across the board and another ambitious feat from director Boon Joon Ho.
