Emergency might be something of a deeply flawed mess, but it's never not an interesting one so I'm going to be generous here.

It goes without saying that Kangana Ranaut carries the entire film and elevates it beyond what it would otherwise be because not only does she give a phenomenal performance as Indira Gandhi, she also shows considerable directing chops, wringing out a lot more emotion and investment out of scenes that would otherwise fall flat.

The biggest problem…

Cheap, smug, and in incredibly poor taste, everyone involved with The Sabarmati Report should be ashamed of themselves.

If you're going to make a film about a tragedy that haunts different sections of the country for different reasons to this day, the least you could do is conduct proper research and take a tone that's respectful of the incident.

Instead, the filmmakers here are more than content (even self-congratulatory about it all), to use the Godhra incident as exploitative cannon…
