Eggers understands, perhaps more than most, how cinema casts a spell over the viewer and how it does so visually and audibly.
It's a shame when a film so dedicated to the idea of casting a spell over people undermines its work, especially with the script. Von Franz's character, and therefore so much of the film's intellectual drive, was crippled by such poor lines. The jab at Newton was just about insufferable.
