How does one properly rate a movie this gloriously messed up? Well if we break it down… Entertaining? Check. Surprising? Check. Simultaneously worshipping the ground Katheryn walked on and also being absolutely terrified of what she was going to do next? You bet. Gonna be a tough one to explain to people when I lead with “Yeah, watched a really good movie last night…”

I was going to give this movie 4.5 stars but then I remembered that When Harry Met Sally exists and that always drops a rom com down a star. That said, this was a Will and Grace star crossed lovers story done pretty well if I do say so myself. It’s never easy to watch a movie or show try to push a gay man/straight woman story but the recovery on this tale was stellar.

Oh, and Allison Janney. She gets five stars, as always.

As I’m sure is the case for many, it will take me at least five or thirty more viewings to fully process this film. Even so, the first viewing was spectacular. I was fortunate enough to see it in an actual theater, complete with a huge bin of popcorn and a life-changing performance by Rebekah Del Rio. As I told her, some people play music and others are musicians. She is undeniably the latter and took the audience to a place that any musician would be lucky to emulate. As far as the film goes: fantastic, confusing, captivating and unexplainable so go watch it for yourself.

Evidently even a week to sit and think about this film was not long enough. From the masterful shots and the strategic costuming to the thoughtful dialogue and it’s painful relatability there is simply too much to discuss to even fairly attempt it. I will be eagerly rewatching as soon as I can muster the strength and necessary volume of tissues so that I can find myself in awe of yet another beautifully intentional choice made along the way to creating this masterpiece.
