Incredible that this won best VFX Oscar in the same year as Fury Road, particularly with its minuscule budget. What I think was the reason behind this was because the fx did not hinder the ability to tell the story during production, much akin to ILM’s recent work on ‘The Irishman'. Rewatching this in the context of 'does it work as a visual story' is interesting. I hadn't really thought about this in previous watches. I definitely think it works better as a piece of philosophical theater, than as purely a visual story. But, I also dont necessarily think that makes it a 'worse' film. It's just a different kind of experience. But, I'm not sure if I tried to distill this film down to just one scene I could extrapolate…

Masterpiece Masterpiece Masterpiece
Bong's been my favorite director for the better part of two years now ever since I studied his filmography in-depth for one of my classes.
And, I didn't think it was possible, but this may very well b my new favorite Bong film. ('Mother' may still have it beat...which is shocking since its one of the few that doesn't star GOAT Song) At the least, easily favorite film of the year so far.
