The Lives of Others 2006
This kept me guessing—slow at first, but then you see the Stasi agent, Wiesler, become so completely absorbed in this couple’s life that he questions his previously unexamined loyalty to the state. The plot thickens very quickly. This is a near perfect film with restrained but effective acting. I highly recommend for anyone interested in the GDR era.

Never Look Away 2018
I loved this one. War, memory, trauma, and art are all major themes here. Don’t let the length stop you from watching this moving, deeply human film. It’s about an artist coming of age in Germany, living through both Nazi and Soviet East Germany. The first 30 minutes or so, we see Kurt experience the traumatic event as a young boy that lingers over the entire film.
