Dune: Part Two 2024
Spectacular in every sense of the word … somehow both intimate and massive, flawlessly placed, and visually stunning. I have my quibbles with the book (the rapid turn to omniscience/omnipotence make Paul a boring protagonist, the Harkonnens are all caricatures) but basically none with this film as an adaptation of that. What a treat.

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
It’s been a long time since I’ve been so moved by a movie. Some of the multiverse gags weren’t always for me (although a couple paid off in enormously vindicating ways after significant investment), but the incredibly flexible oscillation between absurdist comedy, Kung fu action, and devastating sincerity had me on the edge of my seat but also in heartbreaking emotional whiplash. Truly one of a kind.

Late ‘60s nostalgia wrapped in warm animation and a stellar soundtrack, but with a first half entirely reliant on “and then/oh, also …” narration and a theme of common humanity that doesn’t hold up well to scrutiny.
