First of all, amazing cinematography. Haneke's cinema is very harsh, untrustworthy and dark and this is no different than that. Although its very unsettling that we never got to know the reason behind all the horros committed but again, how is that any different from what happens in real life.
What this film was, was a depiction of the society which was just about to go into the WW1, the effect of forced purity on children and the patriarchal norms. It evokes fear rather than sadness, i personally found nothing wrong with the pace of the movie.Translated from by
