Stumbled upon this overlooked gem while scrolling through Netflix. I remember catching this during the original release, and man do I miss Jack…. When he is on the top of his game, he is one magnetic presence. I mean, everybody knows this of course, but I had almost forgotten how extraordinary he was even this late in his career.

In a film not so much about solving the central murder case, as it is about obsession and a man’s desperate…

    A completely overwhelming experience.

I hadn’t seen this film since it hit cinema screens in 2004, and now seeing it again almost 20 years later, I was struck by sheer muscularity of the craft involved and dedication to presenting a completely literal interpretation of the final twelve hours of life of Jesus Christ.

    Absolute peak Bergman!

Granted… He peaked many times during his singular career. But for me Persona exemplifies the pinnacle of Bergmans directorial abilities. The psychological depth of the screenwriting, the precision of the mise-en-scene, his work with Sven Nykvist and last but certainly not least the performances he got from his two leads, Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson.

It is not often you see all of the above coalesce into a perfect whole. Nevertheless, that is the case with Persona, a film that for every viewing reveals just a little bit more of itself.

A truly majestic piece of cinematic art.

The Batman has been a difficult film for me to review. I really liked a lot of what I saw on screen, even though I have numerous issues with exactly what that was.

First off, growing up with the films of the 90s, The obvious go-to reference here is Se7en. The Batman is completely derivative of both aesthetic, tone, sound, plot-points and you could easily substitute Michael Giacchino’s otherwise fantastic score for Howard Shore’s menacing turns in both Se7en and Silence of…
