Despite some flat scene lighting and some twists that go "so the movie can happen" plotting issues, I was interested in the characters, captivated by their drama and allured by the erotic scenes.

Engaging in its sense of disillusionment in the society, oddly gripping melancholy and introspective approach. Despite mostly being set on a single rooftop, was never bored due to excellent cinematography and the protagonists. Liked the somber jazz music.

A Mongolian movie that could make it to the Oscars' shortlist/nomination could come from Inner Mongolian artists! A touching story and an allegory of the contemporary Mongolians' struggle between modernization and the preservation of their heritage.

    The Substance

    ★★

All flash and little substance relative to its 2.5 hours of runtime. Most of the nudity and gore achieves little else than eyerolls as the story is disappointingly underdeveloped and the narrative becomes generic "people shallow & entertainment industry baaaad". The ending feels lazy and desperate as the story wrote itself into a corner. Maybe more inspired and talented people like the original Black Mirror's writers and directors could have done something really special with the premise and the budget.
