Steve Martin’s lead comedic performance is greatly underrated - mines so much from the elasticity of his face without sacrificing genuine understanding of parental anxiety.
Set up borders on emotionally manipulative but the detailed pain in the script and natural acting and chemistry amongst the cast made it worth the while. The two female leads arguably brought a lot more complexity to a mother daughter relationship centred around guilt and sacrifice. Thank goodness for the scenes with Kang Ki Young who understood the assignment of bringing levity breaks so that the audience doesn’t get dehydrated from bawling too much - lends his charismatic natural screen warmth to ease the hurt.
please stop encouraging Sorkin to direct movies.
Also Jeremy Strong was terrible in this I’m as upset as you are about it
Felt physically weighed down by the end. Tremendous execution in writing and direction. And of course the ACTING. The familial chemistry that Hopkins and Colman shared is magical and hard to believe they didn’t even do rehearsals. Elite actors performing at an elite level. Colman continues to show why she’s one of the best actors working right now - effortless in conveying a facade barely keeping her emotions within.
