I simply cannot fathom how forgiveness can be granted that easily… because I would bury myself within the soil of the ground beneath me—right then and there—if my wife, who was shamelessly another man’s mistress, had begged me to forgive her lover. “Look at my husband! He’s a saint!” Your husband?? A saint??? Of what, of whorishness and adultery?
The plot, of course, was absurd (nothing really that I wouldn’t have expected of a Tolstoy novel), but the production was great. Solely the ballroom scene deserves ultimate praise.
And, all that aside, Anna had it coming anyway. She deserves whatever had become of her in the end.
