Takes a while to build its foundation and can be kind of on the nose at times. While misery is abound the depth still feels lacking. It becomes repetitive, the characters have glimpses of light but mostly just suck. Some strong scenes here and there but a lot of it fell flat. The ending felt quite strong even if it was a little ridiculous, even bringing some tears to my eyes. It didn’t make up for the pretty lackluster build up, though, notwithstanding a solid performance from Fraser.

L.A. Confidential 1997
What starts as a seemingly normal neo-noir storyline unravels into a mystery that was perfectly and unknowingly set up, each character and scene that had some significance to the original case also serves as a clue to the new case that emerges. Twists and turns and excitement, great writing and cinematography, great performances - what more can you ask for?
Just make sure to really pay attention as you're watching so you at least get the names of everyone. I…

Brief Interviews with Hideous Men 2009
A brief, artsy movie without a super coherent story that manages to pry pretty deeply into a variety of messed up male psyches through a series of monologues, some more interesting than others. It's not the most entertaining or emotional movie, but it is thought provoking and worth a watch for…

The Monkey 2025
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The cynicism gets old -- it becomes clear that nothing matters in this movie, yeah everyone dies, that's life, it just happens. None of the relationships in this movie are believable. Guy tries to kill his estranged brother and then a few words pass between the two and they're all smiles again, never mind the dead bodies that have piled in the corner -- remember, nothing matters in this movie. No one cares about anything, really. Trite words from the…
