Like a lot of Kitano's movies, it's just a movie where you don't watch it for the plot or character development. You're there for the ride, like a fly on the inside of a car window (instead of a wall). The characters are rigid and unpredictable (sorta reminiscent of Lanthimos' characters)
But the dude has an uncanny ability to capture some really beautiful/strange scenes amidst all the chaos.
I'm overdue for a rewatch but I was really disappointed with this one.
Sure, it's a classic. The soundtrack is fantastic (as most Carpenter soundtracks are). It spawned one of the most recognizable Horror villains. It served as a skeleton/inspiration for the myriad of slasher films that came after, etc etc.
