rewatched with a new perspective because i read Heart Of Darkness for uni recently (and want to bring/force film into my essays in any way possible)
the narrative points that diverge from the original plot are better than the last third. in adapting conrad's novel, coppola is bound to the kurtz storyline and end sequence of the film, which is arguably one of its weaker aspects. while it is true that deployment of expository information regarding kurtz' history moves the…

Chungking Express 1994
it's chungking express day!!
i've been writing this review over time for a long while. maybe not the most objective or analytical but this film has lived in my head non stop since i watched it in january
the humming of electrics and artificial light
when a woman in a blonde wig and red sunglasses and a trench coat brushes past you and you get a slight whiff of cigarette smoke and the thought slowly crosses your mind to wonder…

had a lot of writing up of stuff to do so put this on. took notes as i watched. not very formal analysis!
- fantastic beat drop and super fun and silly beginning credit sequence. hit me like a nostalgia filled brick!
- unoriginal observation but there are 40 year olds acting as teenagers. the amount of suspension-of-disbelief you have to actively maintain is unhinged!
- obviously the stereotypes are exaggerated but the sexism is EGREGIOUS lol

The Gorge 2025

easing myself back into watching films by starting at the bottom. it can only go up from here!!! inconsistent and boring and mind-numbingly expository but i am a completionist, and also i get a bit nervy so the threat of jumpscares kept me watching. anya taylor joy and miles teller have negative chemistry it is like watching ice trying to melt in a freezer. assassins kill people for a living and jokily compare their most daring murders but when they…

oh my god ow ow ow ow this was so intricate and extraordinary i feel like i’ve been punched in the gut. many tears but more like i felt it so far down in my chest that once it started hurting it just didn’t stop. the last shot is one of the most heartbreaking shots i’ve seen at least this year, if not ever.
how the fuck is it a debut????
and now i’m crying on the bus home

Chungking Express 1994
choosing to rewatch one of my favourite films on a big screen in the midst of a horrible academic crisis is a really nice thing to experience. this is so wonderfully transportive and inebriating and made me forget where i was for a lovely couple of hours. reminded me of myself beyond this university. everything is now transient and blurry and meaningful/meaningless. love persists
