  I remember Arrival (2016) and how it diverted from the short story it was based on ("Story of Your Life," Ted Chiang). In the movie, Amy Adam's Louise chose the hard thing, the painful path in her life, even though it would destroy her relationship with her husband and her daughter would succumb to sickness.
