After hearing mixed reviews, I was sceptical about watching this film but am so glad I went to see it after all. After not having seen anything by him, I was blown away by Paul Mescal's performance as Lucius. Denzel Washington as the scheming tradesman Macrinus was as expected fantastic(very much littlefinger vibes from GOT), but the performance which blew me away was that of the twin emperors. Lots and lots of mixed feelings about this film.
First, I love the fact that is is a musical, it fits so well with Arthur not being able to differentiate between fiction and reality, this is particularly powerful during the scene where the Arthur’s childhood abuse is brought up in court and he creates an entire performance in his mind to tune out the detailed. This aspect of it begins a musical however, could have been implemented a lot stronger.…
