The judge is never shown in the film he remains silent. The characters seem to repeat his questions while looking up at him from below. The judge represents the eyes of god, silently watching these liars. The entire trial feels like the last judgment. This is why the characters suffer so much afterward. their souls are already in hell. The pouring rain lashes against the roof of rashomons gate, flooding everything around like a true Great Flood. There is nothing left to do with this world. the only thing that remains is to destroy it.
