Jokes aside this is a pretty ass film! Some of these frames could be paintings or become immortalized on Tumblr blogs. From a technical standpoint, they rank high up for me and I like how they utilized the aspect ratio to add the feeling of being trapped with Oliver and going along for the ride. What a fun film! The intense colors and use of camera focus is so creative. The use of practical lights and set design inject a strong dose of surrealism. The costume design needs to be nominated for an award! The score is also amazing because they knew when to emphasize a moment or when to pull back. Emma Stone is incredible in her role as Bella! The film brought up questions about societal norms, gender roles, as well as power dynamics through great humor and self-awareness. This was worth the wait and is my favorite from Yorgos’ filmography.

Truly a masterpiece. The animation still holds up even after a decade. A great story about identity and believing in yourself and your craft. It’s always nice to revisit something so familiar and comforting. It feels like a warm hug every time I watch this movie.
