funny to feature a digitally resurrected actor in a film about how humanity's dream of immortality becomes anti-life when mediated by exploitative capitalist "rationality"...
otherwise, a serviceable slasher/action flick. i liked that people mostly died out of heroism rather than stupidity. unfortunately the aliens are such a known quantity now that they're simply not that scary—another unfortunate consequence of the perversely prolonged life of the franchise.
the director's most freeform and personal work. rehashes not just themes but entire situations from his previous films, and feels like there's a lot going on that only he can be the cipher for. pretty messy on the whole and quite beautiful for that.
an ultimately pessimistic meditation on mythic violence and empty time, heartbreaking for all its flaws
I wouldn't call these compilation movies perfect (even leaving aside comparisons to the anime series), but I watched Suzume soon after and realised how hard it is to invoke a real-life tragedy in fiction without trivialising the former. Penguindrum does this successfully by adopting an allegorical mode, which allows private and public to be superimposed without reducing one to the other. And indeed Ikuhara's genius lies in his deft and unashamed use of allegory.
