    Centering a mother's coma to witnessing major changes in Germany after the Berlin Wall is quite ironic. Maybe the director employed the "sleeper" role for eastern Germany while emphasizing how they are old-fashioned, undeveloped, and closed-minded as opposed to the western side. Sleeping is also a good metaphor-you just wake up and move on. As eastern Germany did.
