The film Shoeshine (1946) was a beautifully tragic and fascinating film that reflects the harsh realities of postwar Italy within the Italian neorealism genre. The sense of desperation and despair is tangible throughout the duration of the film, through these little boys, as a majority of them ended up in jail for stealing provisions and the bare necessities such as food, horses, and blankets all for the sake of their survival and their family’s survival.
