I don’t log shows on here but saw it was trending and just finished watching it, so I’m glad I’m able to. (I’m also glad I didn’t see the hype before watching it).
The one-take shots did a lot of novel narrative work that I think contributed a lot to humanizing an otherwise oversaturated and at times overdone genre. The acting was phenomenal. I don’t want to trivialize the work itself to just that, but it was normalizing and unnerving…
I’m really glad movies like this are getting made. 16mm film also added a really dreamy/nostalgia effect.
IMO, the writing wasn’t always great and some of it felt like how I’d deliver a monologue in my acting class in college.
However, I think Shelly was beautifully shown as an extremely flawed and selfish person coming to a hard realization that her fairy tale is ending, while retaining her humanity. Delusional and childlike, without being villainous.
She’s unlikeable, but that unlikability is tempered into sympathy because you can understand the despair and frustrations she experiences as an aging woman in an extremely misogynistic environment.
My thoughts: „ugh 🙄. these men need to get a real job…and therapy.”
„Leave the velocibaboons and sharks alone.”
They killed Pedro pascal too soon for me to care on objectification grounds.
As a guys guy film, I’m sure this hits a spot. I didn’t hate it. I’m just kinda tired of female characters being treated either as strong martyrs or passive targets of misogyny. Entertaining but boring. Will forget I watched this in 2.5 weeks. That final song, howmeva, always 🌟 slaps 🌟 .
