  I’m a sucker for Glen Powell but this movie was really strange. Probably the strangest rom-com(?) I’ve ever seen. 

  Things I liked: Glen Powell; the juxtaposition of Gary’s personal life to his professional life as a professor of philosophy; clever plot & writing as far as how love can be transformative - mostly for the worse in this case. 

  Things I didn’t like: that homicide tho 👀

  Anyone But You 2023

  I didn’t expect to like this so much. It works beautifully as an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing, and plays masterfully with the plot, characters, and many of the tropes in romantic comedies to hilarious result. Powell and Sweeney played entirely believable romantic foils for one another and had a chemistry that just buzzed and snapped - I loved them in these roles. Can’t recommend it enough!

  There was nothing fundamentally wrong with this movie but I feel that it was trying to accomplish too much by both telling a nuanced story about a complicated subject and handle a good deal of personal drama. The former was thoughtfully done and well represented; the addition of Ian Fleming was a nice touch. The latter was over written - hardly necessary with Firth and MacFayden (the two Darcys!) in the cast. The cast was excellent - no notes there.
