The Layover 2017
So I figured this would be another day, another bad movie but I would have fun getting through it. Turns out this thing was actually kind of fun.
The hot air balloon sequence is hilarious.
Macy is just doing meat and potatoes directing and while nothing is too flashy and there’s some odd edits here and there everything is pretty cohesive.

A Man Called Otto 2022
They really pushed the relationship with the cat in the trailers and then it turns out there really isn’t much with the cat in the movie. What they should’ve done is push Mariana Treviño in the advertising. She and Hanks have amazing chemistry and a real depth to their relationship that’s very compelling whenever they’re onscreen together.

The Color Purple 1985
Really spectacularly shot and performed, The Color Purple goes a little over the runtime it probably should be hitting but I still thoroughly loved how it ended.
Goldberg in this probably makes my list of my top ten females in a leading role performances. She’s quiet but always just a little smarter than the world that surrounds her, attempting to keep her oppressed. It’s a subtle performance at times and really big in other moments, never really seeming unbelievable though…

My Old Ass 2024
Seeing what everybody thought of this I feel like I’m being harsh but no way no how did I think this was any good. The title didn’t help going in either.
Definitely a movie about getting closer to family and not taking them for granted because they’re the ones who will (in the words of Always Wear Sunscreen) be a link to your past and most likely to stick with you in the future.
