The beginning of this film is probably 4/5 with the beautiful costumes and the sparkling camerawork (and the humor, especially of the woman chugging down her champagne). Then it drops into a melodrama as our original love triangle now shifts to a different triangle and I started dozing off; then the ending felt a little shoehorned in. I didn't understand the re-enactment either but it looked technically impressive.

Dancer in the Dark 2000
I complained earlier in the week about a movie being emotionally manipulative (another Dogme film!) but this one might top it. It's too bad, because it could have been quite impressive as a depressing musical. The law-and-order folks would love to have a death penalty system that works so fast (and a legal system that finds random Czech dancers to appear at trial). Deneuve was a highlight.

Morocco 1930
A pretty standard love triangle story, spiced up with the exotic location of Morocco. I've enjoyed the last few films I've seen with the world-weary Dietrich, but Cooper's wooden personality in a playboy role doesn't really work. Some parts are good; others don't really evolve into anything. Strong ending.

The Sea Wolf 1941
A good atmospheric thriller with a slowly-going-mad captain and a press-ganged crew that can't seem to mutiny correctly even with a few chances. The cast is very good, as is the constant fog and the camera-rocking trick that started making me feel a little sea sick. It's not quite a classic due to the many long monologues and so many plot lines including a few that don't really amount to much.
