nauseatingly beautiful harakiri sequence but mishima's prose just blows this out of the water. i can get behind his minimalist vision for this short (noh theater style really fits) but upon execution mishima unfortunately loses a lot of the substance that made the original short story so great.

Edvard Munch 1974
Started crying involuntarily about an hour in. I really want to watch this one over and over again and revisit some of the montages/write a more polished review maybe because Edvard Munch genuinely was just that good.
I will say this for now: Watkins does a great job of avoiding an unbearably subjective account of Edvard Munch and his intensely subjective philosophy. The cinematic portrait of the artist is instead painted from the periphery inwards--Edvard Munch is nothing at all like At Eternity's Gate and I can appreciate that. Bergman was right honestly.

Moonlight 2016
Coming back to this movie for a film class, specifically with the prompt to keep in mind the way the characters look at each other--and god really paying attention to that added so much on the second viewing. Everything you need to know about Chiron can be found in his eyes--they just hold so much depth and vulnerability and sorrow and yearning that you (especially in the third act, in the diner) can almost feel them bursting at the edges…
