I wish I could give 3.75 stars because that encapsulates perfectly how I feel about this film.
I knew the only takeaway Letterboxd users were going to have is, “Willem Dafoe hot.”
A movie that, funnily enough, refreshing after the new slog of Hollywood war movies that only seem to focus on the mass destruction, rather than following units and their personal experience in something much bigger than them. Watched with my girlfriend because she’s taking a “Vietnam War through Film” history class and this was one of her assignments.
The gayest movie of the year, somehow topping Bottoms.
The score was fanfastic and I really liked these redux versions of childhood originals. I think Chalamet had more ADR than words spoken in scene. There were scenes that really made me ponder how this script made it past dozens of people. There were some highlights, i.e every scene involving Hugh Grant. The ending brought this movie back up to a 3/5 stars. The character arcs ended pretty satisfactorily. Will not be watching again, if I have the choice.
